ALLISON
ARKUSH
Acrylic paint, oil stick, marker and collage on linen, cast gypsum-cement fence. The painting leans on hidden steel rods.
36 x 48 x 18 inches
Inspired by walking the streets of Bushwick, Brooklyn on cloudy afternoons.
I enjoy the contradictions between the wrought iron fence from which I made the mold, and the highly brittle gypsum-cement recreation. The fence becomes a memory of the original object, an effect enhanced by the imperfect edges of the resultant cast.
Fences, especially fragile fences, are a symbol I am still
working with, as seen in ‘Ceramic Fence’ slides 4, 5, 6, and 11.
