ALLISON
ARKUSH
Eggsack, wall mounted
Wood fired stoneware, steel, blue milk paint.
16 x 6 x 3 inches (not including hanging device)
She is Motherhood, a chance at rebirth, an idol, relic, and specimen to be worshipped. Worthy of her nimbus. After the small shark or skate hatches the egg cases wash ashore and dry out alongside the kelp and seaweed. Beach combing kids call them Mermaid's Purses.
The actual egg cases generally measure about three inches long. I would like to make more of them and see how the form translates to different materials (especially metal) and sizes. I am also interested in making a mold and casting a large number of them to be displayed together.
Ceramic Fence
Wood fired stoneware (fence), glazed earthenware (shark egg case), crushed oyster shell, aluminum mesh fencing, vinyl coated wire rope.
28 x 12 x 21 inches when installed, with each picket measuring about 21 x 5 x 3/8 inches.
A ceramic fence.
A paradox of fragility and strength.
Like our psychological defense mechanisms.
Like borders between lands and people.
Or women fulfilling their many roles--domestic and beyond--now and throughout history.
